Europe-Middle East region claims most new activity by three key measures

Article Abstract:

In terms of investment, employees and floor space, Europe and the Middle East region had the most new and expanded facilities activity in 1999. On a global basis in 1999, the average investment value of the top 20 facilities was $1.2 billion, compared to $788 billion in 1998. In 1999, the average top 20 facilities added over 1,500 new jobs, versus 920 in 1998. In terms of floor size, 315,000 square feet in 1998, versus 415,000 square feet in 1998. Based on dollar value, Europe and the Middle East accounted for 35% of the facilities. In terms of investment, Exxon China Petrochemical Company Ltd. ranks first with its $3,000 million new petrochemicals facility in China.

Article Abstract:

The trends in site selection for expansion of companies in the United States and from outside U.S. are discussed. Most of the big companies of the U.S. prefer to open and operate their plants within the country though it is more expensive. The same trend is seen in non-U.S. companies, as they also prefer to expand to the United States.
