Feasting on a brewing bonanza

Article Abstract:

The numbers of brewery-run pubs decreased from 35,000 in 1988 to 15,200 in 1994 as a result of regulations laid down by the Monopolies and Mergers Commission. Although some large breweries have stopped brewing altogether, existing pubs are thriving even though beer sales are declining. This is due to a shift in direction away from alcohol sales to sales of food. Food accounted for 23% of sales in 1994; an increase of 10% since 1991. Whitbread has acquired Pizza Hut, Cafe Rouge and Beefeater. A branded image and themed pubs are the most successful strategies.

Buildings for a fuller future

Article Abstract:

Brewer and public house operator Fuller Smith and Turner PLC of London, England, is using a variety of brands to fuel its current expansion. One concept, branded as an Ale & Pie pub, is the traditional pub selling traditional food and real ale. Fuller's prefers to purchase freehold sites, preferably former banks. The company will invest more than one million pounds sterling in a site and refurbish it at a cost of approximately 600,000 pounds sterling. Fuller's can open ten outlets per year and about six of these will be Ale & Pie pubs.

Magic ingredient

Article Abstract:

The Magic Pub Company is a successful UK pub company which acquired 460 pubs in a period of 50 days in 1994. The company was incorporated in May 1994, and renovation began, with around 22 million pounds sterling invested by 1996. Food sales are increasing through the promotion of the Hungry Horse brand. The company is considering acquisitions, and a stock market flotation could be carried out, though there is no need for a share issue to raise funds without an acquisition.
