Gaining initiative

Article Abstract:

A government-backed initiative is aiming to regenerate the area of England which is alongside the River Thames, east of London. The Thames Gateway Initiative, launched in 1995, has a long-term aim of bringing economic prosperity to this 4,000ha region, over three decades. Plans focus on the commercial and residential development of the area around the town of Ebbsfleet, but the development of a diverse leisure scheme in the Dartford region has also already been announced. The development of another North Kent retail and leisure project, The Bluewater, is described.

An inspector calls

Article Abstract:

Plans to develop the Boal Quay and Harding's Pits areas of King's Lynn, England, have been delayed by the planning inspectorate. The Boal Quay scheme has been approved as part of a general strategy of urban renewal to the area. The Harding's Pits site is considered to be an out-of-town area and therefore retail development is restricted. Development of a supermarket on a site next to the railway station is favoured by planning inspectors. Planning approval for the renovation of the Vancouver retail centre is likely to be granted and work will commence in Jan 1998.
