Granada lodges in town

Article Abstract:

The Granada Travelodge and Little Chef Acquisitions Manager John Bates finds he is often being approached by agents offering unsuitable sites for new hotels and restaurants. He confirms the company prefers to open newly built hotels. He is looking for sites which are easily accessible, near other leisure outlets but on-site parking is unnecessary if there is parking near the hotel. Some 20,000 pounds sterling may be paid to agents offering a good lead. The company are planning to open a 133 room hotel in Bristol, England, during June 2000. Granada has a leasehold arrangement on the property.

A touch of class

Article Abstract:

Townhouse hotels are becoming more widespread although property experts suggest they may not sustain their popularity, if the general economy declines. Townhouse hotels usually have less than 50 bedrooms therefore staff are able to provide a more personal service to customers. Houses used as townhouse hotels are usually leased because their value, as residential properties, is more than they are worth as hotels. Some companies are opening up chains of townhouse hotels and predict a margin of around 50% for a townhouse hotel based in London.

Joie de vivre

Article Abstract:

A former warehouse on Quayside in Newcastle, England, is being converted into the 120 bedroomed Malmaison hotel. The hotel is due to open in Oct 1997. Malmaison's Chief Executive Ken McCullough believes that both residents and visitors to Newcastle will be attracted to the new hotel. The building is listed therefore the exterior must remain structurally unaltered. McCullough has successfully converted two previous properties into hotels. Malmaison may face competition from the Copthorne hotel which is situated nearby.
