Home-made sanctuaries

Article Abstract:

Business Improvement Districts (BIDs) in New York, New York, are the result of local business enterprises investing funds to improve their areas. The involvement of business ensures that improvements are made without being compromised by politics. It has been estimated that areas which have undergone improvement have increased office rental values by between $5-$8 annually. Some local organisations in the UK are studying the scheme for use in the UK. An extra tax of 15-23 cents per sq ft is levied on all businesses to fund BIDs. Employees are also involved in enhancing the environment.
