Labour delivers

Article Abstract:

The Labour government in the UK has indicated that it plans to fulfill many of its manifesto pledges such as the introduction of regional development agencies. John Prescott will lead a ministry which will deal with many of the polices applicable to the property industry. Regional development agencies will make regional plans on matters such as land development. transportation and planning. The time spent on planning applications particularly for large projects is likely to be reduced. Some observers fear that the introduction of a new tax would put an unfair burden on businesses.

The reform enforcer

Article Abstract:

British Urban Regeneration Association (BURA) Chair Bernadette Marjoram has made sure the Association's board is more reflective of those involved in regeneration, such as recruiting a black director and four women. She is known as a strong personality and has been recruited to the BURA in order to bring it to more prominence. It was established as a forum for the independent private sector in 1990. Marjoram points out the private sector has had an important role in regeneration. She suggests a number of local authorities lack the drive to make regeneration happen in their area.
