Listing needs much bigger alterations

Article Abstract:

Owning a building under consideration for listing is not always welcomed by the owners of the building, as it can cause added expense and prevent them from redeveloping the site. Owners should be informed before any listing takes place and are allowed to appeal against the decision. Owners of the buildings can apply for a certificate of immunity which lasts for five years. But they are not always informed by English Heritage before the listing process takes place and therefore are unprepared to mount a protest. On some occasions the public are consulted prior to a building being listed.

Buildings put within reach

Article Abstract:

UK businesses could face costs of as much as 6 billion pounds sterling as they seek to make their buildings fully compliant with the Disability Discrimination Act 1995. Investment in making buildings compliant with this legislation has been around 50 million pounds sterling so far, and investment levels are set to rise as the deadline for making buildings compliant approaches. However, some companies may choose simply to move to compliant premises, as even quite new office blocks will require large-scale modifications.
