Playing the generation game

Article Abstract:

The arrival of a large company which has relocated from elsewhere can have a significant impact on a local economy. Many new jobs are created, and consumer spending is boosted by the arrival of employees who have relocated with the company. Many companies are keen to retain as many employees as possible when they relocate, but inevitably some are lost, and this benefits the local employment market. Areas actively seeking to attract companies considering relocation often emphasise that they will be able to offer highly skilled staff.

Partnerships for posterity

Article Abstract:

Local authorities in the West Midlands have submitted proposals for three possible development sites to the Department of the Environment in an effort to overcome the problem of lack of large sites deterring potential inward investment in the area around Birmingham, England. There is now great determination to ensure that investors are not lost to other parts of the country. The city council's economic development department is also looking at how to improve existing industrial areas.
