Brighter prospects

Article Abstract:

A group of people, comprising landowners, tenants and others, is considering the establishment of a business improvement district (BID), involving public and private partners, to improve Piccadilly Circus, London. The director of the London School of Economics' Greater London Group, Tony Travers, believes that the real estate industry should be involved in BIDs, which would improve property values, and put the industry in a favourable light, without being too costly.

A rising Pollen count

Article Abstract:

Great Portland has offered to buy out the beneficiaries of the Pollen Estate, which owns 44 properties in the West End of London, England, for an effective 109 million pounds sterling. The two main beneficiaries of the Pollen Estate are Greenwich Hospital, which has around 20%, and the Church Commissioners, believed to have 40%. The estate is a private 'trust for sale,' the shares of which can be bought and sold. It operates as a tax-transparent vehicle, with residual income being distributed to the beneficiaries, who pay tax on it on the basis of their personal circumstances.
