Article Abstract:

Experian's Retail Centre Ranking 2000 survey indicates that new retail schemes can have a very beneficial impact on the UK's retail centres. It is clear that even a small change in centre strength can lead to a significant shift in the overall rankings. The leading retail centre was the West End of London, England.

Retailing revisited

Article Abstract:

Throughout the U.K. there is a trend towards the regeneration of town and city centres, with public and private finance joining together to upgrade deprived areas. A common focus of such plans is to attract food retailers to town centre sites, thus encouraging other retailers to follow. However, developers must ensure that retailers feel safe by providing security in the form of closed circuit television and improved lighting. Other key issues include accessability, pedestrianisation and continuing management.

Article Abstract:

The Whitgift Centre in Croydon, England, is undergoing a 14 million pounds sterling refurbishment in preparation for competition from the Bluewater shopping centre which is under construction. It has been estimated that Bluewater could reduce trading in Croydon by 5%. The office market in Croydon has received a boost with BT PLC taking over 100,000 sq ft of empty space in the Prospect West building. Several other office deals are underway which is increasing demand and rental values of any offices that are still vacant. Some speculative industrial development is in progress.
