Japan's treacherous air strike against the US that day was part of its surprise, broad-based offensive to assume control of the Pacific. The Pearl Harbor attack caused the death of very many lives and prompted Pres Franklin Delano Roosevelt to officially declare war on Japan on Dec 8, 1941.
