The retail market in Hartlepool, England, is being rejuvenated, with retail rents increasing to 70 pounds sterling per sq ft. The redeveloped marina will include a restaurant and a seven-screen cinema. A new retail development for the centre of Redcar, England, is being planned. A new 35 million pounds sterling retail development is also planned for the centre of Middlesbrough, England. The local authorities in Middlesbrough have allowed Sunday trading to take place in the town centre which should increase business. Zone A rents have reached 110 pounds sterling per sq ft.

Balancing the wheels of progress

The northern English town of Barrow is being transformed by a number of development projects, partially funded by public funds through English Partnerships and private investment. The 35 million pounds sterling Portland Walk shopping complex will provide 18,580 square meters of retail space in the town centre. The government's five million pounds sterling Single Regeneration Budget donation will fund other developments. The town can be easily accessed from the Dalton bypass and M6 motorway.

Rents will range between 323 and 431 pounds sterling per square meter, depending upon unit positions. The demand for office and industrial property in the area is low. Office accommodation is available above retail properties at rents of 43 to 75 pounds sterling per square meter.
