Keeping up appearances

Article Abstract:

The development of an out-of-town leisure complex at Wilmslow, England, is expected to boost the town's retail market. Many hope that Wilmslow will become as successful as it was in the late 1980's, before the economic recession. The leisure complex will comprise of a cinema, entertainment centre, nightclub and eating facilities. The project has been overseen by the Wilmslow Partnership project, designed to promote town trade. The town is connected to Manchester Airport via rail communications.

Ten years of progress

Article Abstract:

There have been significant changes in the UK retail industry since 1986, many of which could not have been predicted. There are now new patterns in consumer behaviour, and some major new retailers and developers have emerged, while others have collapsed. The development of out-of-town retailing has had the most significant impact on the retail industry, with the first large schemes, such as the MetroCentre in Gateshead, being extremely successful.

Tarred with VSEL's brush

Article Abstract:

The image of Barrow in Furness, England, as a bleak town has been exaggerated. Barrow had 70.2% of males in full-time employment in 1991, compared to 60.3% across Great Britain. Barrow does not have enough shops. It is feared that 55% of comparison shopping demand will be lost to other centres by 1998.
