Shaky foundations?

Article Abstract:

Some local agents suggest the strength of the housing market in Belfast, Northern Ireland, has been partly created by investors purchasing property as an investment rather than a home. Many of the new apartments built along the waterfront are purchased by people coming to work for companies which have opened offices in the city, such as the Prudential. A mixed development combining retail, leisure, commercial and residential space is planned for a 16 acre site at Bridge End Works. A development of offices and apartments is being built over a railway line at Fitzwilliam Terrace.

Demand brimming over

Article Abstract:

Demand for residential building in Dublin, Ireland, has increased partly due to the buoyant economy and the falling employment. There are also a large number of young people looking for their first property. House prices increased by 110% between Mar 1990-Dec 1998. Residential property has become more interesting to investors, as rents have risen by 40%. There is some concern the rapidly increasing number of houses is not matched by improved transportation and roads. The Irish government purchased the Guinness family's former home for 23 million Irish pounds.
