Softly softly

Article Abstract:

Speculative building schemes in towns in the Southern region of Surrey, England, are limited due mainly to lack of funds from investors. Some observers predict that as rents have risen by around 15% new office developments are likely to start within the next few months. Some new investment into buildings has come from abroad such as the foreign investor who paid 40 million pounds sterling for four office buildings in Guildford, England. Local agents fear that restrictions on space for new building development due to planning laws may cause occupiers to leave the area.

Out-of-town beats town and gown

Article Abstract:

There are few big company relocations to Cambridge although there is no lack of space. The city offers academic facilities and has a skilled labour force and good communications. Interest in city centre offices may be diverted by the availability of key development sites for business parks. Demand for out of town locations is rising, although planning policies are restrictive.

Modesty building

Article Abstract:

Latest office designs will have to accommodate new working practices which call for flexible buildings which can support a wide range of tasks. There is likely to be a move towards smaller floors and smaller buildings, with office space being used much more efficiently. There will be a strong move away from the highly over-specified buildings of the late 1980s.
