The Chancellor's summer sell-off

Article Abstract:

Some industry observers suggest the proposed sale of public property assets could have a negative effect on the UK property market. The Chancellor of the Exchequer Gordon Brown has plans to invest 11 billion pounds sterling in capital projects. He proposes to sell 5.57 billion pounds sterling worth of public property to partly finance the projects. Some observers point out the government may fail to realise their estimated prices because of the amount of property and land they are putting on the market at one time. The sale will include Ministry of Defence land worth 700 million pounds sterling.

Labour gets tough on appeal deadlines

Article Abstract:

Deliberately going against planning laws would be made a criminal offence under a future Labour government, according to Keith Vaz, shadow minister for planning. He acknowledges that unlimited third party rights would cause widespread delays in the planning process, with this approach only being successful in cases where a local authority goes against its own development plan. The UK Labour party believes that planning gain is a justified way of aligning community needs with development interests.
