Time for a clearer vision

Article Abstract:

Some supermarket chains have started to consider other types of shopping outlets rather than large out-of-town sites, such as smaller stores in towns and local shops attached to garages. The Labour government have not given local authorities explicit guidelines on how to approach planning applications for new out-of-town retail developments. The local authorities must take a more active role in finding sites and ensuring they have sufficient parking facilities. Out-of-town supermarkets provide new jobs and are popular with consumers but they have a social cost to the community.

Going to town on a rural idyll

Article Abstract:

Garden cities played a valuable role in urban development in the UK in the past, but shortage of land means that they do not really have a future. Urban families used to live in cramped, unhealthy conditions, and in this context garden cities were a positive development. However, it is now possible to live, work and shop in the same place, meaning that people no longer have to move out of inner city areas. Indeed, most inner city areas would benefit from very significant mixed development.

Councils: Exploit the UK's rural reserves

Article Abstract:

Councils in England should be more proactive in allowing conversions of old farm buildings into workshops which can increase employment in poorer rural areas, urges MP John Gummer. He also advocates conversions of old barges and cargo boats, and explores the differences between the UK and French property markets.
