The balance is tipped

Article Abstract:

Over 120 new shopping centres are planned in the UK although the growth in the number of new schemes is not predicted to continue after 2005. There are 18 premier shopping centres in the UK, which have combined sales worth 3.6 billion pounds sterling. Of the top 18 centres only eight are out-of-town developments. Sales worth 29 billion pounds sterling were made in the 400 purpose built schemes. Some retailers have outlets in many of the shopping centres, such as The Link and First Sport. The telecommunications industry has opened 20% extra outlets in shopping centres during the last 18 months.

Shopping for growth

Article Abstract:

Many new shopping centres, being built in Europe, are including leisure facilities along with retail outlets. Some observers suggest more retailers may expand into Central Europe where planning laws are less restrictive and there is an increasing market for retail goods. Others predict the European Monetary Union will provide an impetus for the retail market, in Europe, which has been feeling the effects of a downturn in the financial markets. A number of UK retail companies have chosen to acquire or merge with other European firms in order to take advantage of their markets.

Figuring the future

Article Abstract:

Shopping centre landlords are now starting to make increasing use of retail statistics as a tool to improve the management and marketing of their centres. A new type of hands-on management is emerging, with research data being used as the basis for a proactive approach. Combining information such as footfall, shopper preferences, catchment data and turnover analysis can prove extremely effective.
