The impact of mega-retail discount chains on urban, suburban, and rural economies

Article Abstract:

The advent of mega-retail discount chains created detrimental impacts on the economies of some American cities and towns. Instead of providing diversified line of products and services, mega-retail chains reduced the competitive advantaged of small retailers, forcing them to abandon their businesses. The so-called "one-stop shopping craze" may have spurred the growth of mega malls, but it has also led to a massive reduction in job opportunities. Proliferation of mega-retail stores has also been reported to induce higher crime rate and increased the number of drug abuse cases in metropolitan areas.

French dressing

Article Abstract:

Many shopping centres in France are co-owned by both domestic and foreign investors. Whilst the smaller outlets are owned by investors, the anchor stores mostly own their own shops. A number of foreign retailers are moving in to the French market, such as Gap. England and France have the same floorspace devoted to shopping centres. Trade in English centres accounts for 33% of the retail market compared to only 24% in France. The article also includes information on seven international shopping centres.
