Tom Thumb rules

Article Abstract:

Many property experts are concerned the proposed powers of the new London, England, mayor will add to delays in the planning system. It may lead to differences between the mayor, the local councils and the government. Some observers point out it may give developments outside the powers of the mayor an advantage because they will not be subject to delay. Observers have also suggested other elements may be more important, such as the area in which the building is located. The mayor will be called upon to consider all plans for buildings over 164 ft in height and of 214,285 ft in size.

Stationed for shopping

Article Abstract:

Developers are creating new shopping and leisure outlets in unused railway sites such as goods yards. The sites are often positioned next to existing railway stations and therefore are easily accessible by the public. In Manchester, England, a new station may be built to service the very large shopping facility known as the Trafford Centre. Other developers are capitalizing on advances in railway services, such as the Eurostar link to Europe, and are building shopping facilities adjacent to station premises.

Battle of the species

Article Abstract:

Cambridgeshire county council stipulates strict limitations on planning permission for central site developments and is criticised for giving preference to high-tech businesses. Property developers are being redirected away from the busiest side of the city to less populated areas in the north. The council is looking at ways to reduce heavy traffic in the city centre. The Standing Regional Conference of East Anglian Local Authorities are to review development issues shortly.
