Vaz challenges muddled response to reforms

Article Abstract:

The UK construction industry is most keen to see an acceleration of the planning process, according to Keith Vaz, shadow minister for planning. He believes that the Labour party's plans for the reform of the planning system have been wrongly interpreted, with too much emphasis being placed on the possible relaxation of planning guidance on out-of-town shopping centres. He has announced plans including setting strict timetables for planning inquiries, appeals and call-ins by the secretary of state.

Success rates up in bouncy market

Article Abstract:

The UK housing market appears to be becoming stronger, despite the decline in volume growth. The six leading auction houses in London, England, saw sales up by 26% in volume in the third quarter of 1996 from the year-earlier period, but this was down compared with early summer 1996. Auction houses report high success rates, and regard this as the real indication of the strength of the market, rather than the volume of sales.
