David Roberti faces the end: the mixed legacy of a practical politician

Article Abstract:

Senate President pro Tempore David A. Roberti is in danger of losing his post as a result of California's new term limits. Under the 1992 reapportionment plan called Proposition 140, Roberti's Senate seat will be eliminated with its constituents distributed among three other districts. To retain his job, Roberti is running a special election for the seat vacated by Alan Robbins in one of the three new districts. Roberti's political career and the corruption scandal involving former senators Alan Robbins, Joseph Montoya and Paul Carpenter, all of whom had key positions under Roberti, are also discussed.

Wireless at work

Article Abstract:

The Jones Lang Wootton study into usage of cordless office technology found 62% of those questioned judged the equipment too expensive although 82% felt they would utilize such as system if it cost the same amount as cabling. Some 81% felt cordless technology would give them a more flexible way of working. There are concerns the new technology carries some risk to health but none has been substantiated. The study has found the introduction of cordless technology can result in financial savings from improved working practices and a reduction in structural changes to office buildings.
