Year-end figures hint at lowest sales on record

Article Abstract:

Corporate estate agents in the UK sold only 324,714 houses in the year to Sep 1995, and it now seems that sales could be less than 1 million for the whole of 1995. Housebuilders are reporting very low demand, with the top 25 companies receiving only 12,503 planning approvals in the period Jul-Sep 1995, a fall of 44% from the year-earlier period. It is now widely recognised that attention must be given to restoring the confidence of ordinary people in the future of home ownership.

Standards set as lenders fail to meet repossession requirements

Article Abstract:

Repossessed homeowners do not always get the best deal when the building societies or banks sell their homes. Under the Banking Act and the Building Societies Act the financial institutions must obtain the best price possible for a repossession but often repossessed homes are sold to housing associations en masse or at bulk auctions. This means that the owners do not get the best price and are left with massive debt to the lender.
