Young ones go hi-tech

Article Abstract:

A number of universities are choosing to refurbish or replace their student accommodation facilities because many of the buildings were constructed in the 1960s. Some universities are able to let good quality accommodation to summer visitors when the students are not in residence and therefore receive additional income from the property. Developers are looking to convert older office blocks into student accommodation. University authorities have realised high quality accommodation will encourage more students to apply to their university.

Mandatory bar membership must go

Article Abstract:

California lawyers will hold a plebiscite in May 1996 on abolishing the state's mandatory bar, following years of criticism from lawyers and others. The state bar association arrogantly ignores these critics, who assail its use of mandatory dues for unpopular political activities, its often ridiculous legal education program, and its failure to police unethical lawyers and support their honest brethren. If the bar is eliminated, which requires at least a legislative act, other states may follow suit.
