A comparison of male-female earnings differences across two Caribbean economies

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to analyze differences in earnings among males and females in the economies of Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago. Barbados' main economic industries are tourism and export-oriented multinational businesses while Trinidad and Tobago depends on petroleum. Results indicated that women's earnings average about 85% of men in both economies. However, findings also showed that women in Barbados have less benefits than their counterparts in Trinidad and Tobago which supports a higher level of gender inequality.

A disaggregated analysis of quarterly price inflation in a developing Caribbean economy during the 1980s

Article Abstract:

The influence of consumer demand on the inflationary situation in Barbados covering the years 182-1999 is analyzed using quarterly data instead of the annual statistics for the sake of better trend tracking. Consumer prices were studied in five sectors, namely, food and beverage, medical and personal care, alcohol and tobacco, housing and transportation. Results show that it was only in the first two sectors where demand caused the rise in the inflation rate.
