American musicology and "The Archives of Eden."

Article Abstract:

The condition of American musicology is comparable to the condition of American culture in general. It seems that America has become a great conservator of American art and literature but is not an active participant in their perpetuation as evidenced by the minimal output of original endeavor in such fields. George Steiner's 'The Archives of Eden' was right in proclaiming the impoverishment of American music save for the redeeming genius of jazz.
