India in 1996: a year of upheaval

Article Abstract:

The year 1996 was marked by political upheaval in India. Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao initiated the investigation on illegal hawala transactions which involved several cabinet and opposition members. The move was perceived to be politically motivated but the scandal affected him negatively because his party was defeated during the Eleventh General Election. This was followed by several cases filed against him which included corruption, bribery and fraud. The United Front coalition selected H.D. Deve Gowda as Rao's successor after Rao stepped down from office.

Democratic consolidation? Environmental movements in India

Article Abstract:

The environmental protest movements in India are regarded as chaotic and contradicting the democratic structure and policies of its government. However, a political analysis of these formations indicates that protest actions complement a country's budding democracy rather than undermine it. The environmental protests in India are democratic forms of political participation in the policy-making of its administration.

India in 1995: year of the long campaign

Article Abstract:

India's economic reform program and foreign policy in 1995 were cautiously planned based on the government's desired outcome of the 1996 parliamentary elections. PM Narasimha Rao tried his best to keep his political party intact and to isolate his opponents. The country's foreign policy, on the other hand, was aimed at increasing the volume of exports and the inflow of high technology and investment.
