Beyond the great divide: development studies after the Cold War

Article Abstract:

The books 'Challenging the Orthodoxies' edited by Richard M. Auty and John Toye, 'The Costs of Economic Growth' by E.J. Mishan, 'The Economic Theory of Growth and Development' by David Z. Rich, 'Development Strategies in Africa: Current Economic, Sociopolitical and Institutional Trends and Issues' and 'Prospects for Recovery and Sustainable Development in Africa' edited by Aguibou Yansane are about transition in development studies after the Cold War. All five books assume that a new approach to development is required or offered after the Cold War period. The issues raised and variables identified in the books show both opportunities and obstacles for progress.

Article Abstract:

The late Cold War provided the general settings for the development of the Nicaraguan revolution and its electoral defeat. As the 1980s went on domestic factors such as Frente Sandinista de Liberacion Nacional's (FSLN's) government policies or people's reactions to counterrevolutionary actions became imprisoned in East-West dynamics, not in the sense that domestic decision or ingredient was submitted by both superpowers to a Cold War reading.
