Buying into signs: money and semiosis in eighteenth-century German language theory
Article Abstract:
The 18th century was a time both of psychological uncertainty about the value of money and of thought about the origin and function of language. Both money and language had the potential of being very productive or very destructive. Johann George Hamann was one German thinker who wrote about the close relationship of money and language. The reflections on language of Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, Johann Kaspar Lavater and Johann Gottfried Herder also contain many money metaphors. The move to a functionalist idea of language which took place at this time was influenced by ideas from economics.

Millennial optimism?
Article Abstract:
German studies is entering a new era of critical thought and analysis. Rather than restricting discourse to canon, authors and theorists can use canon as a foundation for new ideas, or they can reevaluate its role in future dialog. An open, inclusive forum offers a broader framework for debate, providing an opportunity to build consensus on many topics.
