Can democracies accommodate ethnic nationalism? Rise and decline of self-determination movements in India

Article Abstract:

Ethnic nationalism and other self-determination movements are adversely affecting India's multicultural democracy. The most popular ethnic movements involve the Tamils in Tamilnadu during the 1950s and 1960s, the Sikhs in Punjab during the 1980s and the Muslims in Kashmir during the 1990s. Multiethnic competition may only benefit democracy in well-institutionalized states, but for those lesser organized states, such movements promote exclusion and injustice and push groups towards militancy.

However, India's character and actions significantly determine the proper understanding of the growth and decline these community conflicts.

Community conflicts and the state in India

Article Abstract:

The political antagonisms and contemporary conflicts between Indian communities may be considered a reflection of the 'us against them' way of thinking. This attitude is also evident in intensifying ethnic disputes, community expressions and the varying Indian state character. Furthermore, issues concerning community-oriented movements and community identities are among the most pressing social and political problems in India.
