Development and displacement in Bangladesh: towards a resettlement policy

Article Abstract:

Infrastructural development in Bangladesh with a population density of 2,000 per square mile, has resulted in mass population displacement. A World Bank report shows that in five development projects, 135,800 people were estimated displaced. Donors agencies, such as the Asian Development Bank and the World Bank have made the rehabilitation of displaced people mandatory. However, the absence of an adequate legal framework and political will have hindered the resettlement process. A positive approach to resettlement and improvements in legal and institutional support can resolve the displacement crisis.

Social policy and the elderly in South Korea: Confucianism, modernization and development

Article Abstract:

South Korea may have attained rapid economic and political advancement but social development in the country remains stagnant. Industrialization and its concomitant effects such as the weakening of family ties, inadequate housing and low fertility rate have resulted in the neglect of the elderly. The government's policy of promoting Confucianism instead of formulating a concrete social policy is doing a grave disservice to the elderly and to their caretakers. The admnistration needs to reexamine its objectives and try to balance economic development with social development.
