Domestic bargaining in Taiwan's international agricultural negotiations
Article Abstract:
Taiwan's decision to eliminate agricultural protectionism was met with stiff resistance from farmers. The retrenchment, de-farming and other cross-cutting initiatives, dictated by foreign governments, limited the Taiwanese government's ability to maneuver and led to a wave of demonstrations by farmers across the country. However, the farmers' protests suffered from organizational and lobbying weaknesses, internal divisions and other problems that gave the government a chance to skillfully use side-payments and propose integrative agreements to diffuse the tension.

The KMT party's enterprises in Taiwan
Article Abstract:
The operation of private businesses by Taiwan's ruling party, Kuomintang (KMT), complicates the economic success of Taiwan's private enterprises. Called 'Taiwan's best-kept secret,' these enterprises make up 10% of the private sector and at least 6.2% of GDP. While such an arrangement breeds and reflects corruption, it was inevitable in Taiwan's context, and contributes to the island's political and economic stability. It has not slowed growth, and actually breaks the party-state combination while advancing democracy.

Taiwan privatizes by fits and starts
Article Abstract:
Efforts made by the government of Taiwan to privatize several state-owned enterprises in 1989 have succeeded in stimulating competition among private businesses. However, Taiwan has not equalled the success of Singapore and Japan in privatization due to various factors. These include the adoption of economic liberalization and democratization policies and the unique structure of the country's political economy.
