Restructuring in Greater Central Asia: changing political configurations

Article Abstract:

Developments in transport and communications technology have led to political changes in Greater Central Asia. The development of sea transport and railways between Europe and Asia weakened Central Asia. Afghanistan became a region of counter-political activity between Britain and Russia. Communication devices such as the telegraph helped to spread information or suppress it. Improvements in Afghanistan's infrastructure after World War II, the end of the Iranian revolution and the Soviet-Afghanistan War, as well as Russia's new 'glasnost' policy, have encouraged European trade with Central Asia.

Chinese press coverage of political and economic restructuring of East Central Europe

Article Abstract:

The democratization of East Central Europe (ECE) since 1989 has been a major concern for decision makers in the People's Republic of China. This is because ECE domestic developments have long influenced Chinese domestic politics, and also because the region's economic and social transition can provide guidance to China. Beijing' reaction to the spread of democracy in ECE is examined by analyzing Chinese press coverage of ECE political, economic and social restructuring between 1989 and 1994. Findings show that Chinese newspapers were uniformly highly critical of these developments.

Greater China and the Chinese "global tribe."

Article Abstract:

China is expected to be one of the first nations to complete the transformation from a nation state into a so-called global tribe. Overseas Chinese businessmen have become important agents in accelerating China's economic growth. Should the envisioned Greater China emerges, a vastly different economic and population arrangements will develop. Greater China will serve as a model for other nations in the 21st century.
