Foreign aid to Nepal: donor motivations in the post-Cold War period

Article Abstract:

Foreign countries had different motivations in giving aid to Nepal during the post-Cold War era. Communist China and the Soviet Union were driven by their own strategic and foreign policy interests in providing aid. Foreign aid from the Soviet Union and India and between China and India was inversely proportional, and so was aid between the US and the UK. However, no such relationship existed between Chinese and American aid. In general, there was no consistent relationship between aid flow and Nepal's economic need or economic performance.

Impact of policy reforms on manufacturing growth in Nepal

Article Abstract:

The shift in Nepal's policy from import substitution to liberalization has positively affected the manufacturing industry. As manufacturing output increased, contribution of manufactured goods in annual total exports grew from 17.9% in 1974-80 to 74.7% in 1986-87. Utilization of manufacturing capacity also improved due to greater access to imported inputs. While employment rapidly increased, particularly in the textile, clothing and footwear sub-sector, manufacturing workers benefited from higher wages.

United Nations: critiques and reforms

Article Abstract:

The United Nations can function better only once the role of the Security Council is better defined. The dominance of Western countries in the Security Council has impacted the decisionmaking of the body. The criticism levelled against its ineffectiveness in Somalia can be traced to this also. The UN needs to undergo internal reform to be a truly relevant international organization.
