The lost decade and the Brazilian government's response in the 1990s

Article Abstract:

The term lost decade refers to the economic stagnation and mounting social problems encountered by Brazil. The expression has been incorporated by the Fernando Collor de Mello government into its rhetoric to show that its problems have been a legacy from past administrations. To make matters right, the Collor government has initiated several proposals which include a selective agenda for modernization, a speedy opening up of the economy and the end of various forms of trade protectionism.

Making aluminum in the rainforest: the socioeconomic impact of globalization in the Brazilian Amazon

Article Abstract:

The introduction of the capital-intensive aluminum industry linked to the global economy in the Amazon has meant displacing local people, and losing agricultural land and fishing areas. Foreign and Brazilian companies have benefited, as have some social groups linked to the project, while others have lost out.
