Laos in 1998: continuity under new leadership

Article Abstract:

Laos's political structure remained practically the same in 1998 despite a change in leadership. The National Assembly elected Prime Minister Khamtay Siphandone, Secretary-General of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party Politburo, president during a convention on Feb 23-26, 1998, to lead a new government composed of 13 ministers. His predecessor, Nouhak Phoumsavanh, retired at the end of his term but remained in office as president of the Lao People's Democratic Party.
