Malaysia in 1997: Mahathir's annus horribilis

Article Abstract:

A succession of political crises made 1997 a difficult year for Malaysia's Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad. The speculative attack on the ringgit by currency speculators also led to an erosion of confidence and eventually to an economic slowdown. The ringgit depreciated by about 40% against the US dollar and the UK pound and resulted in a decline in the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange. The crisis represented the most serious threat to Mahathir's position, with business and industry pressuring him to resign.

The 1995 Malaysian general election: Mahathir's last triumph?

Article Abstract:

The landslide victory of Malaysian PM Mahathir Mohamad's ruling Barisan Nasional can be attributed to the party's ability to focus on its achievements in managing the economy and in capturing the ethnic middle ground. The opposition employed a less convincing strategy, bringing up issues that were no longer politically viable. The election results validated PM Mahathir's secured place not only in Malaysian politics but in Southeast Asia's elite group of elder statesmen as well.

Malaysia in 1996: Mahathir-Anwar bouts, UMNO election, and Sarawak surprise

Article Abstract:

1996 was marked by the political shadow fights between Prime Minister Mahathir Mohammad and Deputy Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. Anwar is described as over-eager to assume the prime ministership while Mahathir seems unwilling to vacate the post. On the other hand, the Malaysian government has maintained tight monetary measures and policies in order to meet Vision 2020. It has also reduced the current account deficit and promoted high technology industries.
