Popular support for village self-government in China

Article Abstract:

The survey data collected in Jiangsu Province revealed that the assessments of self-government institutions, by rural residents, were more positive than those of the elected leaders. The resident's appraisal of the village leader's performance, beliefs in democratic norms and external efficiency, influenced their thinking towards self-government institutions and elected leaders.

China in 2002: leadership transition and the political economy of governance

Article Abstract:

Hu Jintao was appointed as the party general secretary after the retirement of Jiang Zemin to ensure political and policy continuity but Jiang retained the chairmanship of the Central Military Commission. The leadership transition has set the tone for socioeconomic reforms.
