Reaction within symbolism: the Ecole Romane

Article Abstract:

The Ecole Romane, a small, late-19th-century Art-for-Art's sake literary school, broke with Symbolism. The break was more over ideological disagreements than over aesthetic issues, although the Ecole Romane group claimed to be above politics. Its founder, Jean Moreas, gave the name Symbolism in 1886 to the poetry of Stephane Mallarme and to the writers Mallarme influenced in the 1880s. A book of poems by Moreas in 1891 was in time the manifesto for the Ecole Romane, which called for a return to classic poetry based in what it considered to be the roots of French society. It rejected free verse and the treatment of modern subjects.
