Regional ethnic diffusion, state authoritarianism and the crisis of post-colonial reconstruction in Cote d'Ivoire

Article Abstract:

An attempt is made to explain the political economy crisis in Cote d'Ivoire by examining the forces that busted the myth of political stability and relative strong economic performance. It shows that the hollow assumption of the authoritarian state model, as a tool for governance, essential for nation-building and strong, repressive state is a failure and suggests that it should evolve a stand-by institutional structure to manage the crisis by pushing for democratization and totalizing ethnic and religious identities.

Everyday forms of illegal coercion: Explaining abuse of police powers in Argentina

Article Abstract:

The study presents three contrasting interpretations of abuse of Argentina's coercive powers, which are the concept of cop culture, the notion of police violence as a form of social control, and abusive policing used for the processes of social exclusion. Hence, it is argued that the notion of a near universal cop culture, although it offers useful insights in to the police worldview, fails to account for differing levels of deviance and is thus unsatisfactory as an explanation of policing abuses.

Article Abstract:

Democratization of the Argentine military-security-intelligence forces has been arduous with clashes between political actors seeking to restrict the political role of the armed forces, and those wanting to maintain or increase military interventionist capabilities. The clashes over military power in Argentina can be captured by dynamic models of social conflict and it is suggested that military intervention increases and decreases in direct relation to the perceived level of social threat.
