Russia in Asia in 1996: renewed engagement

Article Abstract:

Russia has yet to realize its ambition to play a greater role in Asian affairs despite some progress in the diplomatic arena in 1996. The country has finally normalized relations with several major Asian countries, and has achieved greater success in convincing its neighbors of the reliability of its promises and of its respect for national sovereignty. Despite such progress, Russia's Asian ambition is being hampered by the reluctance of Asian Russia to open to the East, the lack of personal initiatives from its president, and a legal system that does not facilitate foreign investment.

Regional tensions in the Russo-Chinese rapprochement

Article Abstract:

The Russo-Chinese rapprochement is being jeopardized by the tension in the Russo-Chinese border. The tension is caused by the influx of Chinese peasants and city traders in the Russian Far East, which Russian regional leaders view with hostility. Instead of pursuing isolationist policies, Russian regional leaders should establish stronger ties and cooperate with regional Chinese governments. This way, they are certain to share some of the benefits of China's dynamic economy.

U.S.-Russian relations and the North Korean crisis: A role for the Russian Far East?

Article Abstract:

The Russian Far East could provide useful incentives needed to help convince Pyongyang to abandon its nuclear program due to its energy reserves and long history of economic links with North Korea. It is suggested that the US should begin to turn more frequently to its regional friends and allies for ideas and initiatives toward solving Korean Peninsula problems.
