Sakti and Barakat: the power of Tipu's tiger: an examination of the tiger emblem of Tipu Sultan of Mysore

Article Abstract:

Symbols and emblems played an important role in expressing the kinship of Tipu Sultan, the ruler of Mysore who held power from 1782 to 1799. His most well-known emblem was the tiger. Scholars point to the interactions that took place among various religious communities because of the exchange and borrowing of emblems. Most of the studies that historians have carried out, however, focus on the political aspects of the ruler neglecting the cultural environment in which he functioned.
