Singapore in 1994: plus ca change...

Article Abstract:

Singapore's Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong introduced several controversial measures in 1994 to strengthen Asian values that were under threat from Western values. The government also successfully filed lawsuits against and demanded apologies from its critics. The economy made tremendous gains, with growth reaching 10% and per capita income rising to an unprecedented $20,000. Relations with other countries also improved as Goh visited 13 nations, mostly within the region. However, the caning of American teenager Michael Fay temporarily strained relations with the US.

Singapore in 1995: consolidating the succession

Article Abstract:

Singapore focused on maintaining political stability, amid controversies, such as the substantial increases in ministerial salaries, in 1995. The economy posted slow growth but lower inflation, higher labor productivity and higher investment commitments guaranteed a healthy economy. Although relations with the Philippines became tensed and relations with the US were mildly strained, Singapore did not experience any major crisis in its relations with other countries in 1995.
