South Korea in 1992: a turning point in democratization

Article Abstract:

The year 1992 can be considered the beginning of full democratization of South Korea. The Mar 1992 National Assembly general election ended 31 years of authoritarian rule dominated by the military. Kim Young Sam was elected president in peaceful elections. Kim Young Sam's Democratic Liberal Party, however, has 116 out of 237 seats in the National Assembly, not enough for a simple majority. South Korea's growth rate of 4.8% for 1992 was considered satisfactory but way below 1991's 8.4%. South Korea's relations with North Korea, China, Russia and Japan were discussed.
