Sui Yangdi and the building of Sui-Tang Luoyang

Article Abstract:

Medieval Chinese emperor Sui Yangdi's decision to build Sui-Tang Luoyang can be best explained by analyzing the combined influence of the Northern Zhou legacy and Yangdi's Oedipal complex on the way he plans his commercial policy. Despite Yangdi's effort to justify his action by using Confucian rhetoric, his motive in creating the city and introducing the dual-capital system was apparent. His personal, political and economic concerns were reflected in the city's design.

Cuds and snipes: labor at Chicago's Auditorium Building, 1887-1889

Article Abstract:

Chicago's Auditorium Building was the largest building in the US when it was completed in 1890 and has come to be regarded as a work of art. However, its importance in the continuing story of labor/capital relations has been overlooked. It came to be the symbol of the labor unions' struggle for fair pay and conditions. The history of labor relations at the time in Chicago and how they related to the Auditorium Building is presented.

Article Abstract:

Internal power struggles and regional differences that had much to do with the law and order crisis in Timor-Leste in 2006 are the main obstacles to state building in the country. The solution lies in the coming together of all Timorese political figures in the interests of national reconciliation and solidarity with the help of long-term international commitment and support.
