Article Abstract:

The principled believers in independence as well as the principled believers in unification with China are not numerous enough to give any elected Taiwanese leader clear mandate for imposing a solution on the question of national identity anytime soon. As long as Taiwan's electorate keeps the future of cross-trait relations open-ended, the status quo has a reasonably good chance of prevailing over either war or a peaceful reconciliation scenario.
