Religious ideas of the Segregationists

Article Abstract:

Studies of US segregationists of the 1950s and 1960s have generally failed to consider aspects other than the racism. However, the cultural and intellectual institutions of the segregationists are also of interest. The movement failed to attract the general support of the church. Some segregationists attempted to use the Bible to support their arguments or to attack the stance of the integrationists, but, generally, they refrained from great reliance on Biblical support. They consequently lacked the moral conviction and coherence of the civil rights movement.

Putting the "fox" back in the 'Wild Fox Koan': the intersection of philosophical and popular religious elements in the Ch'an/Zen koan tradition

Article Abstract:

The 'Wild Fox Koan' demonstrates the Zen Buddhist concerns with duality, the amalgamation of indigenous spirits, and exorcism. The koan's obvious double nature equates wildness with an unenlightened state of mind. At a lower level, the ancient figure of the trickster fox is integrated into a story that teaches a moral message. Once the fox's true nature is recognized, its spirit can be purified, restoring harmony to the universe of the story.
