On the Paredes-Simmons exchange and the origins of the Corrido

Article Abstract:

Americo Paredes and Merle E. Simmons engaged in an almost forgotten exchange on the origins and development of the corrido (1963) where Paredes objected to Simmons' suggestion that the corrido had emerged directly from the Spanish ballad or romance. On the basis of evidence, Simmons suggested that an unbroken line of transmission connected the Spanish romance to the contemporary corrido.
