The meeting of sacred and profane in New York's music: Robert Moses, Lincoln Center, and hip-hop

Article Abstract:

Robert Moses's career as New York, NY's builder produced dozens of large parks, miles of parkways, expressways and seven bridges. The Lincoln Center, one of his prestige projects together with the UN building, became a center for high art attended by the most affluent citizens. The hundreds of thousands of poor people, mostly Blacks, whose homes were destroyed to make way for these grand projects were driven to the ghettoes where they invented graffiti, break dancing and rap music. Robert Moses's work thus produced a mixture of elitist culture and hip-hop culture.
