The self-declared folklorist: howlings of a lone wolf

Article Abstract:

Robert A. Georges's condemnation of the 'self-identified folklorist' who lacks formal training in the field seems unduly elitist. Folklore study shares many features with the study of literature so that techniques learned in one field can be applied in the other. In addition, given the current academic job market with few positions for certified folklorists, training in other fields adds to the job hunter's ability to find employment. Finally, one's status as a folklorist is determined by the acceptance of one's work by other folklorists rather than by how one was trained.
